How do I take part in FreshWater Watch?

We are very keen to make sure that all data collected through FreshWater Watch contributes to both our local and global research. We therefore only accept measurements from volunteers who are associated with a FreshWater Watch group and have received training from their group leader. If you would like to find a local group or start a new group, see our Volunteer groups page.

Occasionally, we run WaterBlitz events that anyone can take part in.

What is my data used for?

FreshWater Watch data is collated, locally and globally, to provide a better understanding of water quality. This information is used by citizens, businesses, governments and scientists to take action to protect freshwater environments. How is FreshWater Watch funded?

FreshWater Watch is funded through projects with corporate partners, and grants from trusts and foundations. If you are interested in supporting FreshWater Watch, please visit the Support us page.

Is FreshWater Watch available in my language?

The FreshWater Watch data collection tools are currently available in English, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Swedish, Romanian, Chinese (simplified), and Kiswahili. If you would like to help us translate FreshWater Watch into your local language as part of your project, please let us know.

How do I enter my results?

You can only upload data if you are a member of a FreshWater Watch group. Once you are part of a group, we recommend you install the FreshWater Watch app (available for Android and iOS mobile phones) to upload your results on location. If you recorded your results on a paper datasheet, please log in to the website to enter and upload them. Links to the app and datasheet are available on your profile page.

How do I tell the difference between the nitrate and phosphate tests?

All the tests are marked with the formula of the chemical compound being tested for. This label can be found at the bottom of the tube, at the opposite end to the yellow plastic pin. For nitrate the formula is NO3, for phosphate the formula is PO4.

How do I dispose of my test equipment?

The plastic tubes used to test nitrate and phosphate levels are fully recyclable. First, however, they must be emptied of water. Do not empty the tubes into fresh water or down a street drain. Instead, empty the tubes down a sink so the water can be properly treated. The tube and yellow plastic pin can then be recycled.

Can I buy water testing kits from you?

We sell kits containing nitrate, phosphate and turbidity tests to active FreshWater Watch groups – these can be ordered through the portal. We are not able to sell any kits to other groups or individuals who are not actively participating in FreshWater Watch.

I am taking part in a WaterBlitz, how do I get my water testing kit?

We provide a free water testing kit. This will be posted to the address that you gave on your registration form. Unless agreed in advance, you can order a maximum of five testing tubes.

Technical help

I cannot log in to the website

When you registered, we sent you an email with the subject "FreshWater Watch: Account Details". This email contains your login information. If you enter an incorrect username or password several times the system will block your account. Please contact us if you have any problems.

How do I change my username/email/password?

Log in to the website and click on the ‘edit’ button (top-right of the screen). After making your changes, scroll down and click ‘Save’.

Do I have to use the FreshWater Watch app?

The app helps simplify some parts of the sampling such as recording geolocation, but volunteers are welcome to use a datasheet and then enter the information on the website if they prefer. Links to the app and datasheet are available on your profile page. If using a datasheet, don’t forget to log in to the website to upload your results when you return home.

How do I use the FreshWater Watch app?

Visit the app store on your mobile device (Android and iOS) to search for and install the FreshWater Watch app. Log in by entering the same username and password that you use for the website. The welcome screen will display clear options to create or view a record. If you have any problems, try deleting and reinstalling the app on your mobile device.

I cannot log in to the app

  • Enter the same username and password that you use for the website. When you registered, we sent you an email with the subject "FreshWater Watch: Account Details". This email contains your login information.
  • If you enter an incorrect username or password several times the system will block your account. Please contact us if you have any problems.
  • Check that your device is running the latest software. Many devices can be updated in Settings > Software Update.
  • Try deleting and reinstalling the app on your mobile device.
