Dear FreshWater Watch community, within our citizen-science project we normally monitor for MACROplastics, that our volunteers remove from rivers' shores. But, in our research, we study MICROplastics. So, we are planning an experiment on micro plastics and the impacts of these on the "creation" of a sort of ocean surface film (embedding organic material, sort of matrix) able to cap the flux of gases between the ocean and the atmosphere (and potentially other aquatic ecosystems). We'll also study the transfer of metals on micro plastics along the trophic chain, from pytoplankton to zooplankton. We'll do that in mesocosms at the cretacosmos facility http://cretacosmos.eu in the Mediterranean Sea (Greece), one of the most plastic-polluted sea. We will simulate a high plastic ocean with microspheres and fibers and follow plankton dynamics and gas exchange with control comparison (no plastic addition).
We tried a new sort of funding for this project as we all know, we all struggle for science and consumables are expensive. We have our experiment crowdfunding campaign here (experiment.com) and I am reaching out to you to help us sharing this to as many people as possible. We are 50% through and only need only $ 1761 to reach our funding goal (it's an all-or-nothing crowdfunding type) Hope you are able to help us, share, inform, follow us! We need a little support!
Many thanks, Luisa
