THIS WEEK: In the Garden
Use mulch around shrubs and garden plants to reduce evaporation from the soil surface. Adding a layer of tree bark, compost or coconut husks helps keep the sun off the soil and retains precious moisture.
Sweep driveways and paths rather than hose them down.
We're more likely to notice leaks indoors, so don't forget to check outdoor taps (faucets), sprinklers and hoses.
Water should be directed underneath the foliage. There should be enough to wet the top 30cm (12in) of soil, where most plants’ roots are - or should be. Too little water just wets the soil surface and either does not reach the roots or encourages them upwards where they tend to dry out. An excess will drain out of reach of the roots and be wasted. Visit the Royal Horticultural website for more information on managing water in your garden.
